We have a 2 year old GSD that had become hard to control; Always go, go, go and pull, pull pull. He would bark at anyone besides immediate family that came into our home which made visits from outside family members, friends and maintenance workers, very uncomfortable. Going to the vet was nearly impossible as he would not want to be touched by anyone other than myself. It became worse when I could no longer hug my wife or 10 year old son without the dog aggressively barking at the situation.

Realizing I needed some outside help, which I guess would be step one, I followed up on a recommendation from our vet and contacted Haley at K9 Pack NC. I described our situation, explaining that I should be happy that my dog wants to protect me, but perhaps needed a little guidance. Haley quickly corrected me and described his behavior as "resource guarding". I was big dog toy, a human bone - and one he did not want to share.

We gave our dog to Haley for the 4 week training session, and in return she gave us homework and required reading material.
This part is important, Haley does the hard work with the dog, but we had to do the hard work on ourselves. It definitely  became clear this was a two -way street. Through the reading materials and videos that Haley provided, I quickly realized most of the behaviors I didn’t appreciate were behaviors I was encouraging. I also realized that our dog wants to please us and make us happy, which sounds so matter-of-fact, but really makes a difference within the perspective of the situation.

Haley provided us with constant updates and photos of our dog throughout his training and 4 weeks later we were reunited. I was worried at first that  our dog wouldn’t be the “same”, or wouldn’t remember me. That last part couldn’t have been further from the truth, he very much so remembered all of us, but he was certainly not the “same”. He no longer pulls on our walks, he comes when he’s called - the first time - and when he’s instructed to lay on his bed, he does so until told differently. Even more important, he doesn’t make a sound when any of us hug now. He barks when someone is at the door (a behavior we wanted to keep) but immediately stops when he sees one of us answer the door - and he does all of this from his bed, rather than jumping up on the window as he previously   would have.

It’s absolutely amazing what Haley has done and I highly recommend her to anyone who is having difficulty with dog behaviors that could potentially spiral into something worse than aggressive barking. She knows what she's doing, what she’s talking about and most importantly she knows who she’s working with.

Thank you Haley and K9 Pack NC for giving us a second chance with our dog, and the tools we need to maintain the excellent work you’ve done!

Sincerely,
Brian, Emily and Aidan

We never imagined that our hyper, highly reactive 3 yr old rescue would be able to join us at an outdoor cafe, or walk downtown, or lay calmly at our feet during an outdoor concert, or hike narrow trails passing other dogs, and we certainly never dreamed she would heel calmly through the crowded Denver airport. But she did just that two weeks after Haley’s board and train program. Haley’s training results were amazing. It opened up a whole new world, enabling us to bring our pup along on so many adventures. Before, even a walk around the neighborhood block was stressful, not a fun nor relaxing experience. We dreaded having to pass other dogs, even from the opposite side of the street, embarrassed by her pulling, lunging, and barking. She was reactive even if she could see or hear another dog over a block away, hyperventilating in anticipation.

We knew she’d be tough when we adopted her, she seemed to lose her mind in excitement, but we’d fallen in love with this little spitfire. She was already on Trazodone before we adopted her. Later we tried hemp seed and another prescription anxiety medicine, but this offered little to no improvement. We sought out other training and practiced faithfully, but we weren’t improving. It was exhausting. It took us over a year of trying and failing before we decided to go with Haley’s training on the recommendation of a friend. It changed everything!

At our first “go home” session we were absolutely stunned when our little girl remained calm, relaxed and laying on “place” as a visiting dog walked around her cot in Haley’s living room. When our pup came home we certainly had to keep up the practice, but it worked. It worked so well that our anxiety-prone dog has not needed to go back on any medication! (Haley wanted us to take our dog off the anxiety meds before the board and train.) What is truly amazing to us is that our dog seems to have learned to self-regulate. She will choose to put her head all the way down on the ground on a “down” if something is difficult for her, like an approaching dog or if she is trying to manage her excitement about a potential walk when she sees us put on our shoes. She will choose to position herself on “place” facing away from the window where she knows passing dogs might trigger her. And our little girl is so happy! I think she feels more in control of herself and she loves getting to go places with us now. We are tremendously grateful for all of the work Haley did with our dog.

We know we can count on Haley if our dog ever needs more practice. In one of our included follow-up sessions, Haley brought maybe 5+ dogs to serve as distractions so we could get more practice. She was so patient with us as we tried to learn our role as pet parents too.

Without any hesitation, we highly recommend Haley and her 3 week board and train program, especially if you are frustrated and struggling with a reactive dog. (Yes, it’s really hard to leave your baby for 3 weeks, but it is worth it!)
